WV Upgrade Advisor beta fails - cannot run WinSat

I have attempted to run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor beta software on both my home laptop and my desktop computer at work. In both instances, the Hardware Assessment section has displayed an error message: "Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor could not run Winsat. System compatibility status could not be evaluated. " I cannot find a program called WinSat on my system, nor a downloadable installer for it online. Can someone explain to me why this has happened?

Thats because WinSAT is not available in Windows XP, its a feature of Vista.
"The Windows System Assessment Tool (WinSAT) is a benchmarking tool designed into Windows Vista that generates scores based on system performance. It will analyze the graphics subsystem, the processor, the memory, the hard drive, and other critical components of the system and then calculate a total score. You can use this score to compare your system performance to that of any other Windows Vista system."

Dear Mr. Da Costa:
Well, this is a fine Catch-22. How the hell am I supposed to determine if my hardware can run Vista if the software that's supposed to tell me this can only run on Vista?! Should I just count on the RAM and chip speed and hope for the best when Vista does come out, or will it be shell-out-for-a-new-laptop time?

Its strange though you are asked about WinSAT under XP, I ran into errors with Upgrade Advisor, not enough hard disk space, but, not errors relating WinSAT. -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "CajunGypsy" wrote in message

A lot of it still works though - stick it in the System32 folder, and go to the Run command, type in "winsat" and then the command afterwards - winsat aurora works pretty well on mine :o)

Should be in the Program Files folder where you installed the Upgrade Advisor... If anyone wants it, I don't mind putting it on my server for download - all you need is the winsat.exe application and that's about it - www.vistabase.co.uk/winsat.exe :o)
